When WGTK asked whether the library might host a social worker intern to assist with our efforts to provide quality library service to the community, I got a little giddy. As the Youth Services Manager for WCPLD, I recognize the affective, essential work that We Go Together for Kids performs throughout the community and feel fortunate to be a part of such a strong consortium. As the spouse of a school social worker and father of two, I know the importance of strengthening and nurturing the emotional health of young people. Not only was I on board; I was itching to get started.
Lizeth Carmona began working with Youth Services Department staff in February of 2025. She dove head-first into the work, observing Storytime programs, asking thoughtful questions, and offering insightful suggestions on how we might enhance our services. Lizeth observed several preschool story programs, initially assisting staff with set up, then exploring reading materials, developing programs, and leading her own. When staff was absent, she volunteered to run steadfast programming such as Wiggle Worms stories, Toddler Obstacle Course and Sensational Saturday, a sensory based activity.
Of course, Lizeth's advice was most invaluable on mental health collaboration. She helped initiate development of an Accessibility Support Collection the library will create for future circulation, proposed housing a Narcan dispensary as a safety protocol and means for addressing mental health stigmas and helped promote DuPage County Health Department's The Basics program, which recognizes the importance of parent engagement and interaction on brain development.
To celebrate Mental Health Month in May, Lizeth organized Mental Health Kits utilizing resources from Northeast DuPage Family & Youth Services including various stress and coping materials such as journals, stress balls, and Mental Health Cards. Patrons scooped up these valuable resources almost as fast as she could produce them!
A resounding Thank You to Lizeth for sharing her expertise with us, even if for a brief time. The community is lucky to know you.
