More than clothing: How Tiendita WeGo supports students who need it most

Tiendita WeGo opened its doors to the West Chicago Community High School student community in December 2023. “Tiendita,” which means corner store in Spanish, was created to provide students with access to gently used and new clothing. As the number of newcomer students—those who have recently immigrated to the US from another country—and McKinney-Vento students—those experiencing housing instability—continued to rise, it was clear that many were facing a variety of life challenges. The goal of the Tiendita was to create a space where students could access basic necessities like clothing and feel more confident and comfortable coming to school.
With the support of WeGo Together for Kids, Tiendita WeGo has been able to provide students with essential items such as pants, shirts, sweaters, jackets, shoes, undergarments, makeup, cologne, and hygiene products. Students are given the opportunity to “shop” for items, browsing clothing racks and selecting pieces that fit their style and needs.
Since opening, more than 200 students have taken advantage of Tiendita WeGo, and the access and inventory continue to grow each season. West Chicago Community HS is appreciative to WeGo Together for Kids for the partnership and will continue to expand efforts to support students in the West Chicago community.
