A new school year is here! Adjusting to new routines, teachers, and schedules can take time, but with the right support, kids and families can start the year off strong. We asked some of our partners to share their favorite back-to-school tips, and here’s what they had to say:

Stay Flexible & Patient

From BPI

  • Expect a few bumps during the first weeks back.

  • Give kids (and yourself!) extra patience as they adjust.

  • Use tools like social stories, visual schedules, or transition supports to make changes easier.

Celebrate Growth

From BPI

  • Recognize achievements big and small—not just grades.

  • Celebrate effort, progress, and growth throughout the year.

Focus on Health & Well-being

From BPI

  • Make sleep a priority (school-age kids need 9–12 hours each night).

  • Pack balanced lunches and healthy snacks.

  • Keep open conversations about feelings, friendships, and stress.

From DuPage County Health Department

  • Prioritize healthy routines: sleep, exercise, and nutritious meals.

  • Stay up to date on checkups and immunizations.

  • Mental health matters: know what to look for and how to help.

Encourage Independence

From BPI

  • Let kids take on small responsibilities like packing their backpack or organizing supplies.

  • Build confidence by giving them tasks that fit their skills.

Partner with Teachers

From BPI

  • Communicate early about your child’s strengths and routines.

  • Connect before problems arise to build positive relationships.

Morning Goodbyes

From Educare West DuPage

  • Take time for hugs and calm “see you laters.”

  • Let your child know where you’re going and who will pick them up, it creates comfort and trust.

Everyday Habits for Success

From DuPage Health Coalition

  • Be curious and engaged in and out of school.

  • Listen attentively and participate in class.

  • Treat others with kindness and respect.

  • Enjoy family meals together and share about your day.

  • Stay active, limit screen time, and get good rest.

  • Take pride in small routines like making your bed.

  • Be thankful and strive for excellence.

We’re so grateful to our partners for sharing these helpful reminders. Whether it’s focusing on routines, health, or kindness, these simple tips can make the school year a positive one for every child.
